Whatsminer M20S: Giving Your Fans Breathing Room

The Whatsminer M20S ships at 68 TH/s and 3,360 watts — respectable efficiency for a 2019 flagship. But container deployments across Jeollanam-do often choke these machines with inadequate intake clearance, and no amount of voltage tuning compensates for 42°C inlet air.

Measuring Inlet Temperature

Place a thermometer probe 15 cm in front of the intake grille while the unit runs at full load. Compare this reading to ambient temperature outside the container. A delta greater than 8°C means your airflow path needs attention before tuning.

Common fixes we recommend:

  • Minimum 60 cm clearance in front of intake fans
  • Removing decorative panels that restrict side ventilation
  • Adding a filtered intake duct from shaded exterior air

Fan Curve Strategy

Stock M20S fan curves prioritize hash rate over noise. For tuned operation targeting 58–62 TH/s, we adjust curves to ramp fans earlier — accepting higher noise in exchange for lower peak board temperatures. MicroBT’s web interface allows per-percentage RPM targets; we typically set 60% fan speed at 70°C board temp instead of the stock 75°C threshold.

Voltage Headroom

Once airflow is corrected, M20S units typically accept a 50–70mV voltage reduction from stock. Expect hash rate around 60 TH/s at 2,800–2,950 watts. Units with aftermarket PSUs (1800W upgrade) may achieve slightly better results, but we have seen mixed reliability with third-party power supplies and recommend sticking with stock PSUs unless failure history justifies the swap.

Fleet Consistency

M20S hash boards vary more between production batches than S9 boards. Tuning one unit and applying the same profile to twenty others is risky. Budget time to sweep each unit individually, or commission a hash-rate benchmark to identify outliers before fleet-wide changes.
