Antminer S9 Voltage Tuning: Where the Efficiency Cliff Lives

The Antminer S9 remains the most common unit we see on the bench in Gwangju. At stock settings, a 14 TH/s S9 draws roughly 1,372 watts — far more than tuned operators need. The challenge is finding the voltage reduction sweet spot where joules per terahash improve without pushing hash boards into instability.

Starting Point

Before adjusting anything, run the unit at stock for at least 30 minutes and record per-board temperatures. Boards reading above 78°C at the stock voltage (typically 0.72V on BM1387 chips) have less headroom than cooler boards. Note this in your log — you will tune each board individually if variance exceeds 5°C.

The Incremental Approach

Reduce core voltage in 25mV steps. After each step, wait 10 minutes and check:

  • Pool-reported hash rate (should stay above 11.5 TH/s for a viable profile)
  • Per-board temperature (reject any step that pushes any board above 82°C)
  • HW error rate via the miner API (spikes above 0.5% indicate instability)

Most S9 units we assess settle between 0.62V and 0.65V, delivering 11.8–12.4 TH/s at 950–1,050 watts. Going below 0.60V rarely pays off — hash rate drops faster than power savings accumulate.

Summer Considerations

Gwangju ambient temperatures regularly exceed 35°C from July through August. A profile stable in March may throttle by August afternoon. We recommend building a 5°C safety margin into your target temperatures. If your facility lacks active intake cooling, keep voltage 15–20mV higher than your winter profile.

When to Stop Tuning and Replace Paste

If per-board temperature variance exceeds 10°C at identical voltage settings, the issue is usually degraded thermal paste or a lifted heat sink — not voltage. Replacing paste on all three boards before continuing the voltage sweep saves hours of futile adjustment.
